Why Stress Doesn’t have to last for more than 90 seconds

How long does an emotion last? (The quick explainer)

Tulio1.jpg

Fear, Anger, Anxiety, happiness...... 90 Seconds.

Emotions are the bodies responses to what we see, smell, hear, taste, touch or (think) think is in brackets for a moment.

So your 5 senses are telling you how to respond to the world, emotionally and physically. When something happens, we release hormones that give us a feeling.

Eg. Somebody compliments you, you feel good for a short period of time and forget about it. It has come to a conclusion. You don't need to figure out if they had an ulterior motive.

When something bad happens, you feel sad, angry, enraged, confused for the same length of time, because 90 seconds is how long those hormones remain in your system, which is where (think) comes in.

Our logical thinking brains and active memory can replay the action, your brain is blind and deaf, it just knows the response to the signals it gets. So you play it over and over, causing the same response as if it was actually happening again, and again.

So, learn to break the cycle. When someone cuts you off in traffic, when somebody annoys you in work. Break the cycle.

90 Seconds of meditation, listening to a song that cheers you up. Breathe and reset.

Virtual Linkedin Lattes

Screenshot 2020-04-03 at 13.29.49.png

Normally on a Monday afternoon, I would have coffee meetings organised with everybody and anybody who would like to have a chat, get out of the office and call it networking.

With the state of affairs now around Covid-19 and people not spending time face to face. I am happy to open that up to Virtual Linkedin Lattes over Skype, Zoom or Google Hangouts.

All you have to do is send me a calendar invitation to john@johnmurrayheadshots.com or schedule through my scheduling page here on the website.

#JobsWeek2020

ContactSheet-001.jpg

Everyone knows I would do this job for free if I didn’t have bills to pay and love the odd bottle of fancy prosecco at the weekends.

This week was no different.

On Monday, I was invited to Dublin Castle by Linkedin for the Department of Employment and Social Protections Intreo Jobs Week kick off.

The fair itself saw hundreds of recruiters descend on Dublin Castle to showcase what they do and what they are looking for and had over 3,000 delegates registered to attend on the day.

Being the guy who shoots Linkedin Headshots for Linkedin staff. I was tasked to shoot headshots for anyone updating their Linkedin profiles and work with them at speed to shoot as many as we could in the day.

8 hours and 110 people later, I had shot people of all ages, races, sexes and beliefs… AND IT WAS AWESOME!

Thank you to Wayne, Leon, Lisa, Nicola and Natalia for having me along to share my little bits of wisdom and pull peoples ears for the day.

Do What You Can't

Do What You Can’t

Without boring you to absolute tears telling you how great my year has been, I have decided to share one take away, and commit myself to a few things in the process.

This year I was voted to the board of JCI (Junior Chamber International) in Dublin. As the Director of Individual Development, I was charged with organising the years training and development for members, and members of the public who attend the seminars and talks.

In March, we were lucky enough to have RTE presenter and content creator Carl Mullan in with us talking about content creation. From his hilarious Youtube channel to his amazing Instagram Stories he is a dab hand at making us laugh and want to follow along.

One thing Carl was gracious enough to do, was to reference where he got some inspiration, naming Casey Neistat as one of his heroes.

With that Carl kicked off with a video from Casey and gave us all the opportunity to think differently. Something that carried it’s weight through my year.

Here, is that video. Enjoy!
